“A staple in my life”

Parenting ministry has been a staple in my life for the last 7 years. I’ve applied the strategies discussed in parenting to raise my four children. I was a definite dictator when I first joined parenting. I’m now more active and balanced as a parent. I now know that allowing my children to be active participants as I raise them is a whole lot easier than being a dictator. The best indicator of the success of the parenting ministry for me is the emotionally healthy and productive children that I’m raising. In addition to learning to be better parents, we pray, cry, and celebrate together. We all serve as a great support system for each other when needed. Thanks to the parenting group, we are a better family.

“Children matter”

The Parenting class has taught us to appreciate the importance of our children’s opinions, feelings, and their role in our family structure. We have learned to involve our children in the decision-making process in every aspect of our daily lives while including reasonable consequences for their actions, for example, “Please pick up your toys and store them in their proper place or you will lose the privilege of playing with them for the next 3 days”. Practicing concepts such as these provides immediate results and that makes us hopeful that we are preparing them to thrive and survive in the society in which we live.

“Taught me to how to adapt”

I joined the then Parenting class, about nine years ago. The lessons taught me how to adapt to changes in society as it relates to children’s behavior. During this time, we were raising a teenager and a “tween”. It was always a challenge dealing with the everyday issues. The lessons I learned helped me get through those situations. I encouraged my wife to join the ministry and together we have strived and achieved great success with our children. I know parenting will never end as we will always be mom and dad to our children. But this class helped us in many ways and I am proud to say we are parents of a current graduate student and future doctor, and a rising high school sophomore, ROTC Cadet, and football player who plans on becoming an architect. The ministry improved our relationship with our children. They are very comfortable with discussing any issues with us and are receptive to feedback both positive and negative. We are extremely grateful for all this ministry has done for us and look forward to continuing our parenting education.
